Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word spoken by the mouth of God

Why Is God Not Real To Most People?

Why does God seem so far off?
Why does God hide Himself?

In a 2005 Gallup poll nearly 80% of Americans are convinced that God exists. Only 1% are sure that God does not exist. Yet in most discussions of national and world problems – or even personal problems, God hardly seriously come into the picture. It is as if God is irrelevant or so far off to even bother about man’s urgent problems such as wars, terrorism, natural disasters, worsening epidemic of AIDS and other diseases. This clearly shows that God is not so real to most people today. But why?

God excluded from education

Just a few decades ago it seems so normal to talk about God – and to even start the day with prayer – in a public classroom. But almost without us noticing, it has become unfashionable and even illegal to discuss or mention God in classroom. Considering that approximately 90% of elementary and secondary students are either in public or non-religious schools [as of 2004] – for seven hours a day, 180 days a year, it figures that the present educational system is producing whole generations of people that has diminished awareness of - let alone appreciation and reverence for - God’s presence and value in their lives.

Contrast that with God’s instruction about teaching children:

Deu 6:7 And thou shalt teach them [commandments, statutes, etc. – v.1] diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

As if that was not enough, the entertainment industry – and media in general – had largely relegated God to the fringes of human experience and bombarded the young and old alike with images and messages that leave God out or which offers little or no redeeming value. On top of that we have so many distractions, so many concerns, we hardly have time to pause and reflect on God.

Is it any wonder that God does not seem so real anymore?

Whoever was or were responsible for this present state of affairs clearly knows which institutions to pull down – education and entertainment. They got captive audience. The exclusion of God from schools is no mere accident. It was a result of persistent effort by some elements in American society. Unfortunately it has such a profound influence on the American people. The apostle Paul encountered similar bunch of self-styled “intellectuals” of his day:

Rom 1:28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient [unbecoming or not right];

Sounds familiar? Paul describe these morally bankrupt losers quite bluntly:

Rom 1:22 Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
Rom 1:23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
Rom 1:24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
Rom 1:25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
Rom 1:26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
Rom 1:27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
Rom 1:29 Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
Rom 1:30 Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,

This reminds me of many savants and politicians today who virtually worship God’s creation [nature and wildlife] more than God Himself. These same people would readily condone and support sexual relationships that Paul describes as “unnatural” in v.26-27 [men with men and women with women] – and even the murder and mutilation of innocent children [i.e abortion] as veritable sacrifices at the altar of personal convenience or expediency. Which is clearly why they want to eliminate God from their conscience.

And they obviously think they are getting away with it. And it is making it feels like God is so far off and so irrelevant to us today.

The fact is Satan owns the ultimate responsibility for what is happening in society today:

Eph 2:2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

But these people of “reprobate mind” as Paul describes them would be held responsible for their own conduct. It is instructive to remember Sodom and Gomorrha [Gen.18-19].

Does God Hide Himself?

No less than King David himself felt that God hides Himself, when he observed evil men seemingly undeterred:

Psa 10:1 Why standest thou afar off, O LORD? why hidest thou thyself in times of trouble?
Psa 10:2 The wicked in his pride doth persecute the poor: let them be taken in the devices that they have imagined.
Psa 10:3 For the wicked boasteth of his heart’s desire, and blesseth the covetous, whom the LORD abhorreth.

Yes, why does God seem aloof sometimes?
The prophet Isaiah explains:

Isa 59:1 Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:
Isa 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

Isaiah also wrote:

Isa 1:15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.
Isa 1:16 Wash you, make you clean; put away the evil of your doings from before mine eyes; cease to do evil;
Isa 1:17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow.

That is quite self-explanatory – our sins keep us apart from God. When we sin, God expects us to repent of it and stop doing it.

Isa 55:6 Seek ye the LORD while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near:
Isa 55:7 Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.

Here, God does not just want us to stop doing evil – He wants us also to forsake our own unrighteous ways and plan or thoughts.

Walking with God

In the “Old Testament” period we have men who walked with God – such as Enoch, Noah, Abraham David, and many others. Hebrews 11 describes how they and other faithful men walked with God. It is by walking with God that He could become more real to us. Walking with God is not something mysterious. It is simply obeying God and His law (1 Kings 11:38). It is plain fellowship and friendship with God:

1Jn 1:3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Jesus Christ.
1Jn 1:4 And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.
1Jn 1:5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.
1Jn 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth:
1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

The Greek word for walk [peripateo?] here implies a deeply involved focus and practice of God’s way. Fellowshipping or walking with God is not a mere weekend diversion from normal daily routine. It is really a continual practice and pursuit of God’s way of life as shown in His law. It goes without saying that fellowship with God involves constant conversation with Him not just in privacy of our room, but also anywhere we need or feel like conversing with Him – not unlike conversing with our spouse or friend – whether at work, or on the road, while shopping – anywhere! For indeed God is anywhere we go (Psalms 139:7-12)!

Of course God knows we would fail at times and He is more than willing to forgive us:

1Jn 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
1Jn 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

This is exactly the same as what Isaiah was saying [above].
In other words, it takes no less than walking with God for Him to become real to us. And it means getting to know Him and His will better by spending time studying His word (2 Tim.2:15)
